
By the time cotton is waist-high and the pivot is running, you are past the easy part of the season. The plants are setting squares, plant bugs are looking for a place to feed, and every application you make from here on out has real money riding on it. The trouble is that the sprayer you dialed in back in April is not the same sprayer you are running in July. Nozzles wear, pressure drifts, and your ground speed in a rutted, irrigated field is rarely what it was on dry planting-season ground. A sprayer that was accurate two months ago can quietly be putting out too much or too little without a single warning light coming on.
Recalibrating mid-season is how you make sure the product you paid for actually lands where the crop needs it. Here is how to check your John Deere sprayer now, while the crop still has time to respond.
Calibration is not a one-and-done job. Three things change between planting and mid-season, and all three pull your application rate off target.
The first is nozzle wear. Every gallon that passes through a tip slowly opens up the orifice, and a worn tip sprays more than its rated output while changing the pattern and droplet size. The second is pressure. Screens and strainers clog with field debris over the season, which changes the pressure reaching your tips even when the gauge in the cab looks steady. The third is ground speed. Once you are driving through irrigated cotton with soft spots and pivot tracks, holding your planting-season speed is almost impossible, and the application rate moves directly with speed.
None of these show up as a breakdown. They show up as skips, streaks, or a spray bill that does not match the results you are seeing in the field.
At a minimum, recalibrate once per season. Beyond that, run through it whenever you change nozzles, target speed, or operating pressure. Mid-season is one of those natural checkpoints, especially before your first post-bloom plant bug application when coverage matters most.
A good habit is to check your nozzle tips a couple of times per season rather than waiting for a problem. If you are running the sprayer hard on cotton, corn, and beans, the tips can wear faster than you would expect.
Start with a clean machine and a walk-around. Inspect everything that moves liquid from the tank to the tips: hoses for dry rot and wear points, O-rings and fittings for leaks, and the tank for buildup or cracks. Clean the main line strainers and the individual nozzle screens, because debris here will throw off everything you do next. Confirm the boom is level and the breakaway sections move freely.
Then check the tips themselves. Set the sprayer to your intended operating pressure and catch the output from a single nozzle for 60 seconds. Do this across several nozzles and compare each one to the expected output in the nozzle catalog for that tip at that pressure. Any nozzle that is more than 10 percent off the rated output should be replaced. Uneven tips are the fastest way to end up with striping in the field.
Before you fine-tune, you need three numbers: your target gallons per acre (GPA), your ground speed in miles per hour (MPH), and your nozzle spacing in inches. From there, you can find the gallons per minute each nozzle needs to deliver:
GPM per nozzle = (MPH × GPA × nozzle spacing in inches) ÷ 5,940
Once you know the GPM each nozzle should be putting out, you can compare it to what your tips are actually delivering and adjust pressure, speed, or tip size to close the gap.
With the walk-around done and your target numbers in hand, work through it in order:
When your measured output lands within roughly 5 percent of the desired rate, the sprayer is calibrated, and you can get back to the field with confidence in what you are laying down. If you are running a machine with ExactApply or a rate controller, the same principles apply, but the system still depends on good tips and clean screens to hit the target rate.

Mid-season in North Louisiana cotton is plant bug season.
